Diode under forward bias. If no voltage applied is across a semiconductor diode a thin depletion region exists around the region of the p n junction preventing current flow. There are two ways in which we can bias a pn junction diode. In forward biased p n junction diode the positive terminal of the battery is connected to the p type semiconductor material and the negative terminal of the battery is connected to the n type semiconductor material.

Now lets try applying an external voltage to the pn junction diode. Forward bias and reverse bias. The process of applying an external voltage is called as biasing.

The p n junction diode during the reverse bias is highly sensitive to the light so that it can be used in photodiode application. A diode is two terminal electronics component which can be connected to the source in two different ways. In forward biasing the current is easily flowing through the circuit whereas reverse bias does not allow the current to flow through it.

In the image above you can see that an external voltage is applied across the semiconductor diode where the p side of the diode is connected to the positive terminal and the n side is connected to the negative terminal of the battery.
